Finding God

I am amazed at times at how secret the Presence is. For me, it was not something I had to go halfway around the world to find. You can find it in your basement. And nobody really taught me about it. They told me to pray and that I would find God in solitude, but they did not really tell me how to do it or just how powerful it was. That I found out myself. Through practice.

And I like to say I got lucky. Lucky, or God was leading me to it all the time. But he gave his Presence to me. I did not so much purpose to find it, although I knew I had to search to find Him.

It seems though that transformation and the experience of God happens very much in the secret and in the quiet. It makes me think of that story of Elijah when he found God not in the loud and big stuff, but in the gentle whisper. In fact, it seems that sometimes that is the only place you can find God. You can go looking for him as much as you want to without, but the truth is he is within, and he will be found through silence and contemplation. If you can still your mind and body, he will show up. And he will offer a Presence that is not your own, and that is what you need. God knows you have had enough of yourself, and he offers you himself.
